Excision XDP905 Cutting & Tapping Paste
Excision XDP905 Paste is a heavy-duty cutting and tapping paste for high-pressure machining: tapping, drilling, reaming and broaching in steel, stainless and other hard metals. It’s a thick paste that clings to the tool, so it stays in the cut where liquid oils run off or burn away. This keeps the cutting edge lubricated under load, reduces friction and heat, and extends the life of taps and drill bits. The 500g tub has a wide opening, so you can dip a tap or cutter straight in. That makes it the practical choice for fabrication shops, maintenance workshops and machine shops doing a lot of tapping and drilling.
Why Use a Paste Instead of a Cutting Oil?
Tapping and drilling put heavy pressure on a small cutting edge, and that’s where liquid lubricants break down first. XDP905 Paste has high film strength and extreme-pressure (EP) properties, so the lubricating layer between the tool and the workpiece holds when the torque is highest. That matters most when you are:
- Hand or machine tapping blind holes, where oil drains away before it can help
- Drilling vertical or overhead surfaces with a magnetic drill, where oil runs straight off
- Cutting stainless steel and tough alloys that work-harden and wear out tooling
- Reaming or broaching where you need a good surface finish
Key Features
Extreme-pressure film strength: The lubricating film stays intact under the heavy loads of tapping and drilling. This reduces galling, chipped threads and broken taps.
High adhesion: The paste stays on the tool and in the hole. It suits vertical and overhead work, and blind holes where a liquid would drain out.
Longer tool life: Lower friction and heat at the cutting edge keep taps, drills and annular cutters sharp for longer. That means fewer tooling changes and more uptime.
Corrosion protection and anti-seize: The paste resists water and leaves a protective film on finished threads and bores. This helps prevent rust and seizing.
High residual lubrication: A light film stays on the part after machining, which makes it easier to run in fasteners.
Dip tub for workshop use: Dip the tool straight in for quick, full coverage between holes. A 500g tub lasts a long time at a busy tapping or drilling station.
Workshop Safety & Compliance
According to Excision’s Safety Data Sheet, which is prepared under the Model WHS Regulations, XDP905 Paste is not classified as hazardous. It is not regulated as a dangerous good for road, sea or air transport, and it is unscheduled under the SUSMP. Its flash point is above 260 °C. This makes it simple to add to your workshop chemical register and easy to store with your other consumables. Normal good practice still applies: work in a ventilated area, wear gloves for repeated contact, and wear eye protection suited to the task.

How to Use
- Clean any swarf, scale and old lubricant from the tool and the workpiece.
- Dip the cutting end of the tap, drill or cutter into the tub so the cutting edges are evenly coated. For tapping, also coat the inside of the pre-drilled hole.
- Machine as normal. On deep holes or long production runs, back out and re-dip as needed.
- Wipe off any excess after machining. You can also leave a light film on the part for corrosion protection.
- Replace the lid after use to keep swarf and dust out of the paste.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is XDP905 Paste used for?
It’s a cutting and tapping compound for high-pressure machining, such as tapping threads, drilling, reaming and broaching. It works best on steel, stainless steel and other tough metals.
Can I use XDP905 Paste with a magnetic drill?
Yes. Because the paste is thick and sticks to the cutter, it works well for mag drilling on vertical and overhead surfaces, where liquid cutting oil would run off.
Is XDP905 Paste good for tapping stainless steel?
Yes. Its extreme-pressure film reduces friction and galling when tapping stainless steel. This helps prevent torn threads and broken taps in material that work-hardens.
Is XDP905 Paste hazardous?
No. Excision’s SDS states it is not classified as hazardous under Australian WHS Regulations, not regulated as a dangerous good for transport, and unscheduled under the SUSMP.
Should I buy the tub or the tube?
The 500g tub is the better value for workshops doing a lot of tapping and drilling, because you can dip tools straight in. The 200g tube with brush is more convenient for toolboxes, service vehicles and site work.
