Uvex pheos cx2 IR-ex Safety Glasses – Shade 5, Infradur Plus Lens

The uvex pheos cx2 IR-ex Shade 5 is a pair of sporty, wraparound safety glasses with a dark grey infrared-filtering lens. They protect your eyes from the heat and glare of hot work such as gas cutting, heating, brazing and working near furnaces or molten metal. The glasses are certified to AS/NZS 1337.1 for medium impact and AS/NZS 1338.3 for infrared filtering. The lens blocks IR radiation from 780 to 3,000 nm and 100% of UV up to 400 nm, and it has a permanent anti-fog, scratch-resistant coating.

Why infrared protection matters

Infrared radiation comes off anything glowing hot: an oxy-fuel flame, a preheated workpiece, a furnace mouth or a ladle of molten metal. You can't see IR, and you mostly feel it only as heat, so the damage builds up without warning. Over time, repeated exposure is linked to cataracts and retinal damage. Standard clear or smoke safety glasses stop impacts and UV but do very little against infrared.

uvex's IR-ex lens technology filters infrared while keeping good colour recognition. That means you can still read signal lights and colour-coded components on the job. The lens also carries uvex's Infradur Plus coating. It is permanently anti-fog on the inside, so it won't fog up next to heat and in humid Queensland conditions, and it is hard-coated on the outside to resist scratches.

What are shade 5 IR safety glasses used for?
Shade 5 IR glasses are for hot work where there's strong infrared radiation and bright glare. Typical jobs include oxy-fuel gas cutting and heating, brazing, working at furnaces and kilns, foundry and molten-metal handling, and glass work. Always check the shade number against the job and the relevant Australian Standard.

Can I use these glasses for MIG, TIG or stick welding?
No. Safety glasses don't replace a welding helmet for arc welding. Arc welding needs a helmet with the right filter shade (usually shade 9–13) and full face protection. These glasses are a good choice to wear under a welding helmet and for helpers or workers nearby exposed to heat and glare.

What's the difference between shade 1.7, 3 and 5?
The shade number shows how much light and infrared the lens filters. The higher the shade, the darker the lens. Shade 1.7 lets through 46% of visible light and suits low-intensity IR work. Shade 3 lets through 14%. Shade 5 lets through only 2%, so it's for the most intense heat and glare in the range.

Will the lens fog up near heat?
The Infradur Plus coating is permanently anti-fog on the inside. It's built into the lens rather than being a spray-on coating that wears off.

Are these glasses Australian Standards compliant?
Yes. They are certified to AS/NZS 1337.1 for medium-impact eye protection and AS/NZS 1338.3 for infrared filters.
