M6 Ceramic Ferrules for Drawn Arc Stud Welding

M6 ceramic ferrules are single-use cordierite rings that shield and shape the weld pool during drawn arc stud welding of M6 threaded studs. Sized specifically for the shorter, finer arc of 6mm fasteners, they contain the arc, exclude atmospheric contamination, and mould a clean, uniform fillet around the stud base — then break away cleanly once the weld has cooled. QWS stocks M6 ferrules for immediate dispatch Australia-wide, with matching M6 studs, chucks and ferrule grips available for complete stud welding setups.

Why the Right Ferrule Size Matters

A ferrule isn't a generic consumable — it's matched to stud diameter. An oversized ferrule lets the arc wander and the pool spread, producing an undersized or irregular fillet; an undersized one restricts venting and traps gas in the weld. These ferrules are dimensioned for the exact internal clearances M6 studs require, which is what makes them reliable on thin-gauge sheet where blow-through and uneven melting are the usual failure points.

Key Features

  • Premium cordierite construction — withstands weld-pool temperatures beyond 1000°C without premature cracking or spalling mid-weld
  • Uniform arc containment — stabilises the drawn arc around the full stud circumference, preventing blow-off and one-sided melting on thin sheet
  • Engineered vent geometry — internal venting channels release gases in a controlled pattern while moulding a clean, consistent structural fillet at the stud base
  • Clean single-strike release — the fired ceramic fractures cleanly with a light tap from a hammer or pliers after cooling, shearing away without bonded residue, ceramic fragments in the fillet, or rework — so finished studs are inspection-ready straight off the gun

What does a ceramic ferrule do in stud welding?
It contains the electrical arc, shields the molten pool from the atmosphere, and moulds the displaced weld metal into a uniform fillet around the stud base. Without a ferrule, drawn arc welds suffer porosity, spatter and inconsistent fillet formation.

Can I reuse ceramic ferrules?
No — ferrules are single-use. The thermal shock of welding makes the ceramic brittle by design, so it releases cleanly. Attempting reuse produces contaminated, unreliable welds.

Do M6 ferrules fit other stud sizes?
No. Ferrule internal geometry is matched to stud diameter. Using an M6 ferrule with a larger or smaller stud compromises arc stability and fillet quality. QWS stocks ferrules across the full metric stud range.

How do I remove the ferrule after welding?
Wait for the weld pool to solidify and cool, then fracture the ferrule with a light hammer tap or pliers. It breaks away cleanly with no residue on the weld.
