PFERD ALUMASTER HSD-R 50 High Speed Milling Disc — 49mm for Aluminium

Product Description

What is the PFERD ALUMASTER HSD-R 50?

The PFERD ALUMASTER HSD-R 50 is a 49mm high-performance milling disc designed specifically for aluminium, mounted on a standard angle grinder (10mm mount) or, with the matching arbor, on straight grinders and flexible shaft machines. Instead of grinding aluminium away as fine dust, the ALUMASTER mills it off in chips using replaceable tungsten carbide cutting inserts — which means no hazardous, explosive aluminium dust, no extraction system, and an exceptionally high stock removal rate. The HSD-R version is built for radial applications such as weld seam work, fillet welds, root seam processing and surface milling.

For fabricators, the practical difference is simple: you get the removal rate of an aggressive abrasive without the dust risk, the clogging, or the consumable burn-through. The carbide inserts are turnable and replaceable, so the disc body is a long-term tool rather than a throwaway consumable — a genuinely cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to grinding wheels and flap discs on aluminium work.

Why aluminium dust matters

Fine aluminium dust is both a respiratory hazard and a combustible dust risk in workshop environments — conventional grinding on aluminium typically demands extraction and housekeeping controls. Because the ALUMASTER cuts chips rather than generating dust, it removes that problem at the source. It's an engineering control built into the tool itself: no extraction system required, and a cleaner, safer bay for the operator and everyone around them.

At just 49mm diameter, the disc can also be run without a guard, giving excellent access and visibility for hard-to-reach areas and delicate components.

Special Features

  • No hazardous or explosive dust — mills chips instead of grinding dust; no extraction system required
  • Exceptionally high stock removal rate on aluminium and soft non-ferrous metals
  • Replaceable, turnable tungsten carbide inserts — the disc body lasts; only the inserts are consumable
  • Robust cut geometry engineered for safety, durability and low-effort operation
  • 49mm diameter runs guard-free for access to tight spots and delicate components
  • Cost-effective alternative to grinding wheels and flap discs of comparable duty

Materials & Applications

Suited to: aluminium, wrought and cast aluminium alloys (soft and tough), brass, copper, zinc. Lower-strength non-ferrous metals and fibre-reinforced plastics can also be machined — verify suitability for your specific application.

Typical applications: milling and milling out, weld seam and fillet weld work, root seam processing, and general surface work on aluminium fabrications.

Recommendations for Use

  • The ALUMASTER works with low contact pressure — don't force it, and don't plunge it deep into the workpiece (it's a milling disc, not a cutting tool)
  • When machining edges, work along the edge, never across it
  • Never decelerate the disc against the workpiece — this can break the inserts
  • Tighten the flange nut with a proper tool (e.g. face pin wrench); hand-tightened quick-clamp systems are not permitted
  • Torque insert bolts to approximately 4 Nm using the supplied hexalobular key or a torque spanner, and check insert security regularly. Never run damaged inserts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ALUMASTER create aluminium dust? No — this is its defining feature. The tungsten carbide inserts mill aluminium off as chips rather than fine dust, so it doesn't generate hazardous or explosive aluminium dust and no extraction system is required.

What grinder does the ALUMASTER HSD-R 50 fit? It mounts directly on angle grinders (including cordless) with a 10mm mount. With PFERD's BO 8/10 arbor, it also runs on straight grinders and flexible shaft drives.

What's the difference between the HSD-R and HSD-A versions? The HSD-R is designed for radial applications — working on the disc's circumference, ideal for weld seams, fillet welds and edges. The HSD-A (axial) version is designed for face-down surface work. Choose based on how you'll present the tool to the workpiece.

Can I use the ALUMASTER on steel or stainless? No. It's engineered for aluminium, aluminium alloys and softer non-ferrous metals (brass, copper, zinc), plus some fibre-reinforced plastics. It is not suitable for steel.

Are the cutting inserts replaceable? Yes. The tungsten carbide inserts are both turnable and replaceable — replacement insert sets (standard WSP-A-8R 50 and HICOAT-coated versions) are available, along with a full service set, insert bolt set and torque spanner.

Do I need a guard on the angle grinder? Due to the 49mm tool diameter, a guard is not required — one of the reasons the ALUMASTER excels in hard-to-reach areas.

Is it faster than a flap disc on aluminium? The ALUMASTER delivers an exceptionally high stock removal rate and doesn't load up the way abrasives do on aluminium, and because only the inserts are consumable it typically works out more cost-effective over its life than grinding wheels or flap discs of comparable duty.
