M8 Ceramic Ferrules for Drawn Arc Stud Welding
M8 ceramic ferrules are single-use cordierite rings that contain the arc, shield the weld pool and form the fillet during drawn arc stud welding of M8 threaded studs. Built for the higher amperage and longer arc times mid-sized fasteners demand, they're the standard consumable for automotive fixturing, manufacturing lines and light structural fastening. QWS stocks M8 ferrules for immediate dispatch Australia-wide, alongside matching M8 studs, chucks and ferrule grips.
Built for Medium-Duty Arc Loads
M8 studs sit in the sweet spot between sheet-metal fastening and heavy structural work — but that means longer weld times and higher current than smaller studs, and a ferrule that isn't rated for it will crack or erode mid-cycle. These ferrules use thicker ceramic wall sections dimensioned for M8 arc energy, so containment holds for the full weld duration, cycle after cycle in automated feeding systems.
Key Features
- High-amperage thermal containment — robust cordierite walls manage the increased heat load of M8 weld cycles without melting, cracking or breaking down mid-weld
- Full atmospheric shielding — seals the weld zone against oxygen, nitrogen and moisture, eliminating porosity and delivering full-strength fusion between stud and parent material
- Precision scallop venting — engineered outer vents release welding gases in a controlled, even pattern while retaining molten steel at the joint, producing a consistent 360° fillet
- Standard industrial profile — drop-in compatible with all standard M8 stud welding guns, chucks and automatic ferrule feeding systems, with no gun modifications or adapter hardware required — ideal for high-volume production lines running mixed equipment

What's the difference between M6 and M8 ceramic ferrules?
Internal diameter, wall thickness and vent geometry. M8 ferrules have larger clearances and heavier walls to handle the higher amperage and longer arc time of 8mm studs. Ferrules are not interchangeable between stud sizes.
Why is my stud weld porous?
Porosity in drawn arc welding usually means atmospheric contamination — a missing, damaged or reused ferrule, or moisture in the ferrule itself. Use a fresh, dry ferrule for every weld and store stock in dry conditions.
Will these fit my stud welding gun?
Yes — they follow the standard industrial M8 profile and suit all common drawn arc guns, chucks and automatic feeding systems. If you're running a non-standard setup, contact QWS to confirm fit before ordering.
Can ceramic ferrules absorb moisture?
Yes, ceramics are mildly hygroscopic. Store ferrules in dry conditions; damp ferrules can introduce hydrogen and porosity into the weld. Ovens used for electrode storage can also recondition ferrule stock.
